GLEESE MoU Signing Ceremony

On 29 March 2022, The Ministry of Education and Sports, represented by Provincial Education and Sports Services of Huaphanh, Mr. Lin-Anong Thongkhammee and ChildFund in Laos’ Acting Country Director, Mr. Mattiphob Douangmyxay, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Gender and Language Education for Ethnic Students’ Empowerment (GLEESE) Project. This project is funded by Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and ChildFund Korea as a Civil Society Cooperation Program.

ChildFund in collaboration with The Ministry of Education and Sports, KOICA and ChildFund Korea co-created the Gender and Language Education for Ethnic Students’ Empowerment (GLEESE) Project in Xamneua and Sopbao Districts, Huaphanh Province to boost equal and equitable access to quality education for all Lao children in the target areas. The project seeks to support all girls and boys in Sopbao and Xamneua Districts to access and complete lower secondary education with the construction and renovation of school facilities, empowerment of girls and boys in decision-making through gender equality awareness training, and improve student learning outcomes in the Lao language by improving teacher capacity.

The 15 target villages in Sopbao District and 15 target villages in Xamneua District of this project were identified through a process of consultation with communities, District and Provincial authorities. With the focus on reaching disadvantaged communities with significant levels of ethnic populations.

Approximately 1,092 persons in two districts are direct beneficiaries, including lower secondary school students, teachers, village education development committees (VECD) and parents. Indirect beneficiaries account to 16,084 persons (7,824 Female, 8,260 Male). The GLEESE Project will run until 31 December 2023.
